reported himself to the Land Officer and commenced duty

in that Department on the 10th. ultimo.

This arrangement was, however,

only made pending the possibility of finding more suitable

employment for . Craig in connection with the Kowloon-

Canton Railway, as he is too highly paid an officer to be

retained in the post of Land Bailiff. Mr. Craig is being

paid out of lapsing salaries in the Colonial Secretary's

Department.

The creation of this new post is,

in my opinion, essential to the efficient discharge of

land work in the Southern District of the New Territories,

and I have therefore subject to Your Lordship's approval

adopted the Land Officer's proposal and given effect to

them in the draft estimates for 1910.
